How did Mother’s Day come to be? Was it conceived by Mothers or Greeting Card Companies? Maybe it was Florists and Candy Companies that came up with the idea. We will answer these questions and more.

History of the Mother’s Day Holiday
Celebrations of Motherhood have been around for thousands of years, dating back to the Greeks and the Romans. However, it was a woman who had lost her own Mother that led the charge to create a day that honored Mothers.
Anna Jarvis was a successful businesswoman living in Philadelphia when her Mother moved in with Anna and her brother. Anna’s Mother’s health was declining, and Anna spent most of her time caring for her Mother.
Anna and her mother were very close; she grew up in Grafton, West Virginia, where she attended Andrews Methodist Church with her mother and siblings. Following a sermon one Sunday, Anna read a prayer that proposed a Memorial Day for Mothers. This would foreshadow her later efforts to establish a National Holiday celebrating all Mothers and Motherhood.
Anna’s mother died in 1905. Anna grieved the death of her mother deeply, and while she pondered the best way to memorialize her mother, she decided to hold a ceremony at Andrews Methodist Church in 1908.
A shrine still exists today to commemorate the ceremony at the church, which has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The idea of a day to remember and cherish Mothers was gaining momentum.
Julia Ward Howe
One of Mother’s Day’s predecessors came from Julia Ward Howe, a noted suffragette and abolitionist. In 1870, she wrote an editorial that asked mothers to unite to promote world peace titled “Mother’s Day Proclamation.”
A couple of years later, Howe campaigned to hold a “Mother’s Peace Day” that would be celebrated every June 2.
Other Precursors to Mother’s Day
Motherhood celebrations were held by ancient Greeks and Romans. In many festivals, they honored mothers and prayed to mother goddesses like Cybele and Rhea.
Juliet Calhoun Blakely was the inspiration for a Mother’s Day celebration in Albion, Michigan in the 1870s.
National Proclamation Creating the Holiday
Finally, President Woodrow Wilson signed a National Proclamation in 1914 creating a Holiday on the second Sunday in May to honor all
Mothers and Motherhood.
The Holiday grew in popularity Greeting Card Companies, Florists, and Candy Companies jumped on the bandwagon, and Mother’s Day became a commercial success.
Anna Jarvis was not pleased. She felt the commercialization of the Holiday was lessening the impact of the role of Mothers and tribute to them. She fought for years trying to get the Proclamation of the Holiday revoked but was unsuccessful.
Today, Mother’s Day continues to be celebrated on the second Sunday in May and is enjoyed by mothers and their children worldwide.
