How Greeting Card Poet Was Born
Michael O’Halloran was working at a Minneapolis advertising agency in the 1990s, and it was a custom at his small office to have everyone sign a card for those celebrating a birthday.
A card was routed a week in advance, but it seemingly always came down to the wire to get everyone to sign – with the office manager having to walk the card from person to person on the last day – because folks took so much time writing their birthday wishes.
Why did it take so long?
Folks wanted the message to be good for the recipient. The messages would be seen by others – including the partners. Many folks didn’t have confidence in their writing abilities. The birthday message would be a reflection of the writer’s creativity.
O’Halloran thought there should be a resource for folks to choose from well-written messages and contemplated writing a short book with message ideas for all greeting card occasions. But, alas, he took no further steps at that time.
Fast forward 20 years, and O’Halloran had five years prior launched Sports Feel Good Stories, a website featuring inspirational sports stories and sports reference materials. He was looking for a theme for a new website and remembered his greeting card message book idea.
Access to message ideas via a website seemed much more practical than a written book, and after some time, giving the theme more thought, he launched Greeting Card Poet.
