We use many terms of endearment – words and phrases to say “I love you” to our loved ones. ‘Darling’, ‘honey’, ‘sweetheart’ and ‘dear’ are some of the most commonly used words, not only for lovers but also for kids. At times, an entirely unrelated word or phrase may be used.

The Importance of Using Terms of Endearment

Relationships are small cultures in themselves and rituals like nicknames and similar private languages reinforce them. Although they play a healthy role in ordinary times, terms of endearment are useful whenever conflicts arise. They allow a natural recourse to playfulness and humor whenever things become rough in relationships.

British Terms of Affection

‘Dear’ is one of the more common words used by couples in the UK. ‘Love’ and ‘darling’ can also find place once in a while. It is amusing that British couples gradually lose their interest in using creative words and phrases with age. Interestingly, they are more likely to make up for this by using words of affection of their children.

You shouldn’t be surprised if parents call their kids ‘pumpkin’, ‘lamb’, ‘sweet pea’ or ‘pikaninny’ in British English. In Scotland, children are often called as ‘bairnie’ and in Ireland as ‘mhuirnin’. Teens usually use the words ‘lover’, ‘baby’, and ‘babes’ to express their affection.

Brief History of Popular Words of Affection

‘Honey’ has been found to be used as word of affection since at least the 1500s. ‘Sugar’ and ‘baby’ are more recent words. Let’s look at the brief history of some of the most commonly used terms of endearment.

  • terms of endearment imageSweetheart – The first time the word ‘sweetheart’ was used to express love, it was written as two words – ‘sweet’ and ‘heart’ during the 17th century. It has been used traditionally for expression love and affection both generally and for a specific person with whom one is in love.

But starting the 19th century, ‘sweetheart’ has been seen to be used as part of disdainful slang language in many cases. One example is that of Frank Parrish’s book, Fire in the Barley, where he uses it in the following way – “Try harder, sweetheart, or I’ll plug you in the guts.”

  • Darling – It is one of those rare few words of endearment that crosses different boundaries. It has been used traditionally by everyone ranging from the taxi cab driver – “where are you going darling?” to the upper classes. Interestingly, is a rephrasing of the word ‘dear’, coming from the old English word of ‘deorling’, taking the shape of ‘deyrling’ over the 16th century and then becoming ‘darling’ eventually.
  • Sugar – ‘Sugar’ has been in use since the 13th century. It has been used in the proverbial and figurative sense since then. But the current way of using the word originated only during the 1930s. It has taken many other forms like sugar-pie and sugar-babe, and many others. A more recent song goes – “Tippy tap toe, my little sugar plum” (Woody Guthrie).
  • Baby & Babe – These are a couple of the most commonly used words of affection almost all over the world. The reason is probably simple – both babies and loved ones evoke almost similar kind of emotions. We want to love, care for and protect them. ‘Baby’ can be more commonly seen as a normal word used between lovers in the US.

‘Babe’ is nothing more than a shortened form of the word ‘baby’ and is mostly seen used in Britain. The word ‘baby’ can seem to be arrogant and not welcome unless it is used in a playful or comical form. These two words are different from the above-mentioned terms of endearment in that they are used only between couples. They are seen as offensive if used by strangers.

Oh, and great love quotes work well in notes.

Use of Words of Affection and Terms of Endearment in Love Letters

There are two splendid examples of how people have used terms of endearment in ways that are at the opposite ends of the intensity of love.

Vladimir Nabokov’s Love Letters

Vladimir Nabokov’s love letters for his lady love Vera are considered as one of the best examples of the use of creative words of affection. His initial love letters opened with terms of endearment like “my dear life”, “my love and joy”, and “my happiness”. Gradually, his used of words turned to interesting nicknames and a loving series of bestiary. It is worth mentioning both the lovers shared a love of animals between them. So his later letters could be seen starting with my “Mousie”, “Sparrowling”, “Roosterkin”, and “Mymousch” (stands for monkey in Russian). With words like ‘Fire-Beastie’ and ‘Pupuss’ (a mix between a puppy and kitten), he took things to the extreme.

The Romans Use of Terms of Endearment

The Romans can be seen to be standing at the other end of the spectrum compared to the level of intensity used in the words of affection by Nabokov. Some of the most commonly used words in love letters during Roman times include ‘dearest’, ‘sweetest’, and ‘well-deserving’. Some can seem to be touching on the borders of official words.

The words for ‘dearest’ were ‘carissimus’ and ‘carissima’. ‘Dulcis’ is ‘sweetest’ and ‘bene merens’ is ‘well deserving’ in Roman. In other words, the traditional words of endearment used in Roman love letters were more restrained in terms of their declaration of love.

Christmas is without doubt the most celebrated festival of all. Interestingly, its reach is so widespread that unlike the big festivals of other religions, it is celebrated in almost all countries. What makes it even more interesting is that different countries can have unique customs and traditions even though they are centered on the main theme of the Christmas Eve, the Christmas Tree, Santa Claus, and Christmas gifts and greetings.

Let’s explore how this beautiful and lively occasion is celebrated in unique ways in different countries.

The Great Christmas Traditions around the World

United Kingdom Christmas traditions

There are many Christmas traditions which originated in the UK – and some which are unique to this country. Wassailing and Boxing Day are two such old customs. While The Christmas Meal is a dinner in the United States and many other countries, it is taken at lunch in the UK. Roast turkey and vegetables are the main servings on the menu. Roast beef and goose were popular in the old days. But Brussels sprouts are an integral part of the meal.

Ireland Christmas traditions

Ireland has always been known for its unique, often bizarre, traditions. On Christmas, or Nollaig, the Irish folks will place a large candle on the sill of a large window on the Christmas Eve. They will keep the candle lighted throughout the night to welcome Mary and Joseph. People go around wishing each other Nollaig Shona (Merry Christmas).

The day after Nollaig, they celebrate St. Stephen’s Day with the custom of Wren Boys Procession. The procession involves young men and women dressing up in homemade costumes, carrying a holly bush at the end of a long pole and singing a rhyme on wren bird.

Australia Christmas

The world recognizes Christmas with winter and snow. Australia recognizes it with the hottest time of the year – there’s no snow on Christmas here. Carols by Candlelight services are unique to the country, with many local bands, choirs and even celebrity singers joining the troupes. Unlike in the West, the carol songs here don’t have words about winter and snow.

Australia also has the tradition of Santa Claus and gift giving, but when in Oz, he rides on kangaroos. At the same time he also has to change his clothes to adjust to the hot Australian Christmas.

German Christmas cardAustria and Germany Christmas Celebrations

Both Austria and Germany have many similarities in how Weihnachten is celebrated. Merry Christmas is pronounced as Frohe Weihnachten in German. In Austria, it is believed that Christkind is the one who decorates the Christmas tree and brings kids presents. In local tradition, Christkind is a baby symbolizing new born Christ. She has wings and golden hair.

In Nurnberg, in Germany, a parade takes place every Weihnachten and a young girl is selected to dress up and participate as the Christkind. She will have a long gold/white dress, blond and curly hair, a gold crown, and wings of an angel.

The Ski Jumping Four Hills Tournament is also associated with Christmas celebration in Austria and Germany.

Venezuela Christmas

Caracas, Venezuela has a unique way of celebrating Christmas – skating to mass. For an entire week before Christmas Eve, the streets of the city are closed for the Early Morning Mass where everyone skates to mass. No other traffic is allowed during this time. On Christmas people wish Feliz Navidad to each other.

Italy Christmas Traditions

Italians wish Merry Christmas as Buon Natale. The Christmas Witch is an integral part of Italian Christmas. It is not the Santa who brings gifts to kids here – it is a witch. Locally known as La Befana, the witch is an old woman who rides on a broomstick. The belief is that she’s covered in soot because she enters and leaves through chimneys. Kids would leave food and wine out for her, just like milk and cookies are left for Santa.

Norway Christmas

Even Norway has its witch and broom belief in Christmas. In this Scandinavian country there is a tradition of hiding brooms on Christmas Eve. The locals believe that otherwise the evil spirits and witches will come out of the graves and fly around on the brooms. Norwegians wish each other by calling ‘god jul’.

Mexico Christmas

Mexicans have an entirely different way of celebrating Christmas. They have figures carved in radish lining and lined along the central plaza in big towns 2 days before the Christmas Eve. It is a colorful celebration with dancers, conquistadors, mythological/historical figures and events being carved in radishes and placed all around. It is known as ‘El Festival de los Rabanos (Festival of Radishes). People enjoy food and dance all around and wish each other Feliz Navidad.

Finland Christmas

Santa takes an entirely different form in Finland. He is known as Joulopukki, which stands for ‘Christmas Goat’. Here Christmas is referred to as ‘Joulu’, people wish each other ‘hyvää joulua’, and the traditions can seem to be weird to outsiders.

Even animals in Finland are given their own Christmas. It is a custom among Finnish farmers to hang sheaf of wheat on trees for the birds. Many people will also hang bags of nuts and suet on branches.

People in visit the graves of their family members around on the occasion. In fact, the custom is so widespread that the cemeteries and nearby areas can become crowded and the local administration finds it difficult to manage the traffic. Cemeteries turn into wonderland as glowing lanterns are left alight through the night and they create a dazzling effect against the snow.

Sweden Christmas Traditions

The Swedes have added another dimension to how Christmas or ‘Jul’ is celebrated. Of all the things they like to spend their Christmas Eve afternoon watching Donald Duck. This has been the tradition in Sweden since 1959. The TV1 station will air the program called “Kalle Anka och hans vanner onskar Gol Jul” exactly at 3 pm and still half the population in the country watches it on Jul Eve.

Many Swedish families will make a goat out of straw and place it near the Christmas Tree to guard it. In Gavle, the locals will build a massive goat out of straw and it takes more than 2 days to build. The Swedish Santa is referred to as Jultomten. Along with Santa, even elves and gnomes (Tomte and Nissar) can bring presents. Just like the Norwegians, the Swedish also wish each other ‘god jul’ on Christmas.

Romania Christmas

Romania is another country where there is a goat tradition associated with Crăciun, as Christmas is known here. The carol will have at least one person who is dressed as a goat, who is known as Capra. The goat will dance and jump around and engage in all kinds of mischief. Merry Christmas is wished as Crăciun fericit in Romanian.

Another Crăciun tradition is the Dubasi or the drumming band. On Christmas Eve dozens of bachelor men will go around through the streets, some even carrying violin and saxophone and the locals will give them presents.

India Christmas

In India, the traditional Christmas Tree can take any form. It is common to come across a mango tree or even a banana tree to be decorated as a Christmas Tree. In fact, mango leaves could be one of the decorative items all around homes. Catholics in some Indian states hold fast through to the Christmas Eve. The Indian version of Santa is referred to by different names – Father Christmas, Christmas Papa or Christmas Baba, and he arrives in horse and cart to deliver presents to kids. The locals wish each other ‘Krisamas kee badhaee’ in Hindi.

Russia Christmas Celebration

Russia always has a reputation for having a unique traditional and they don’t seem to miss the chance on Rozhdestvo (Christmas in Russian). In fact, the Russians celebrate Christmas an entire two weeks after December 25th – on January 7th. The Russians wish each other Merry Christmas by saying ‘S Rozhdestvom’.

Many people start fasting from the Christmas Eve until they see the first star. They break their fast by drinking the famous ‘kutia’ porridge. Interestingly, the Rozhdestvo Eve dinner is mostly meatless. You could often be surprised to see some families enjoying ‘kutia’ from the same bowl.

There is another strange tradition to Russian Rozhdestvo, although it is increasingly fading away. Families will throw sochivo on the ceiling and if some of it gets stuck, it is believed to bring good luck.

A few years ago, e-cards appeared to be the ideal alternative to greeting cards, but they really haven’t been as big of a force as initially thought. Christmas cards may not have the same popularity as they had 10 years ago, but the tradition is poised to remain here for centuries.

Probably the biggest change in Christmas cards from 30 years is the growth of photography on cards. Being able to include a family photo in a chosen setting seems to be the avenue of choice for many households. With the photo being the star, many cards have moved from the traditional one-fold to more of a post-card type format. With hundreds of choices of format and your own custom photography, cards can look very different. But, for the most part, there’s still a uniformity.

So When Did the Christmas Card Giving Tradition Start?

There is recorded history of Christmas card giving, and it goes back to the middle of the 19th century. Sir Henry Cole commissioned John Calcott Horsley in 1843 to print him the first Christmas card. Sir Cole was a close friend of Horsley and came up with the idea of sending these greeting cards to loved ones on the special occasion.

The first Christmas Cards were black and white because of the printing technology of the time. They were then colored with by hand and sent out to friends and relatives. It was an alternative way to send greetings to everyone during Christmas time because he didn’t have the time to write letters. When the Penny Post service started in the Victorian times, it became a widely accepted tradition to send out cards.

Growth in Popularity of Christmas Greeting Cards

After Sir Cole’s Christmas cards became popular, holiday greeting cards become widely popular in England through the late 19th century and for the entirety of the 20th century. People started to create more elaborate cards in terms of shape and decoration. Along their journey of evolution, greeting cards were further illustrated by famous artists including Walter Crane and Kate Greenaway.

At the same time development in printing technology and processes in the middle of the 20th century helped in the mass production of greeting cards. This not only helped improve their popularity due to easier availability of larger number of designs, cost effectiveness further increased their acceptance. Yet it was not until the 1970s that large number of small card makers started emerging.

Thanks to the latest in technology, people have access to a wider choice of Christmas cards, not only in terms of looks and designs but also in terms of message.

Challenges to the Legacy of Christmas Cards

The new generation, brought up using the web on their smartphones, doesn’t have the same exposure to Christmas card giving as its earlier generation. In recent years this gradual decline in the use of Christmas cards seems to have done something good to this tradition. They have become special additions to every Christmas and stand out as something unique for the new generation, while the older generation cherishes their unique feel and tradition.

The personal touch that a Xmas cards can provide hasn’t lost its impact. The tradition lives on. With each card sent, a new Christmas card devotee might be born.
