What is Elf on the Shelf?

The explosion of the Elf on the Shelf phenomenon began in 2005 with the publication of The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition by author Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell.

What is Elf on a Shelf?

The storybook tells of how Santa’s elves visit children between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve to find out who’s been naughty and who’s been nice. Then the elves report back to Santa Claus so he can reward their good behavior.

Each book comes with a scout elf to watch over the children and let Santa know of both good and bad activities at the end of each day.

What is a scout elf?

A scout elf is one of Santa’s helper elves who reports how the children behave every night during the holiday season.

What is an Elf?

How do you define an elf? An elf is a mythical creature that is human in appearance but who has magical powers. An elf doesn’t age or gets old very slowly. Elves have their roots in German folk stories. Elves also appeared in Scandinavian folklore.

Some of the best-known elves from literature appeared in The Elves and the Shoemaker by the Brothers Grimm. In this story, the elves are hardworking and helpful aides who depart after finishing their work.

A Holiday Tradition

Make Elf on a Shelf a family tradition each year for you and your children. The happy memories will stay with your children as they grow older, and they will always look back fondly on the Christmas tradition.

Don’t forget to take an “Elfie” with your favorite Elf on the Shelf.
