Read the frequently asked questions and fun facts below for some surprisingly enjoyable information about bundt cakes.
Why is the Bundt Cake called as such?
Bund is the German word for Club or Group and these cakes were served at clubs or group gatherings. Therefore, the previously Gugelhopf came to be known as Bundkuchen (Bund Cake).
Later, when the inventor patented the pan, he added the ‘t’ at the end.
Who invented the Bundt Pan?
Invented by H. David Dalquist in 1950, bundt pans are a relatively recent invention. It is especially so considering how the cake style itself is centuries old.
Dalquist used to be the owner of the Nordic Ware company in Minnesota and cast the pan for Minneapolis-based Hadassah Society. It was initially called a bund pan but he later added the ‘t.’ This was probably so because people often made the ‘d’ a soft sound when it wasn’t meant to be.
Some others suggest that this was more so for Trademarking purposes. Or, it could have been to put some space between his product and the German-American Bund.
Are bundt cakes difficult to make?
Because it is simply a shape, not a type, the bundt cake difficulty level varies immensely. Making the shape, however, has become relatively easy with the invention of bundt pans.
How do I celebrate the day?
You can celebrate national Bundt Cake Day simply by getting a bundt cake and enjoying it with family. Or, you can hold a small party and bake a cake, perhaps with the recipe mentioned later in the article.
Unlike what many people believe, bundt cakes are not a type of cake. Instead, bundt is simply a shape of the cake, and any other type can be made in this style.
In 1949, the Pillsbury flour company launched a baking contest for the celebration of their 80th Anniversary. The only rule was the use of Pillsbury all-purpose flour. The contest was a success and is held every year, with numerous women showing their baking prowess. Then, in 1966, Ella Helfrich baked the ‘Tunnel of Fudge’ cake using a Bundt Pan, and it became widely popular.
Bundt pans were originally sold at a meager price of just $4. Now, the average price has risen to over $25 and can go into the hundreds of dollars.
Along with the traditional bundt cake recipe below, you can also make various other foods in bundt cake pans. These include simple bread or a fancy meatloaf as your table centerpiece.
