Origin of the Word Thursday

The name is derived from Thor, the Germanic god of thunder. Thor equates to the Roman god Jupiter. So, the day of the week between Wednesday and Friday is named after the god of thunder. In the Romance languages, the names come from Jupiter.

In Chinese and Slavic languages, the day’s name comes from a derivation of “fourth,” as in the fourth day of the week. While the Greek and Portuguese designate the name “fifth day.” The Portuguese’s Quinta-Feira means literally “fifth day.”

What is Thursday in French and Other Languages

French: Jeudi.

Gaelic: Déardaoin.

German: Donnerstag.

Italian: Giovedi.

Norwegian: Torsdag.

Portuguese: Quinta-feira.

Spanish: Jueves.

Swedish: Torsdag.

Thursdays in Religion

This fourth or fifth day of the week, depending on where you start the days of the week, holds significance in many religions.

Maundy Thursday, or Holy Thursday, is important in Christianity because it is the day of Jesus’ last supper. It’s part of Holy Week. Ascension Thursday comes 40 days after Easter, where Jesus Christ ascended into heaven.

In Judaism, this day of the week is considered good for fasting. The Torah is read in public on these mornings.

What does “Thursday’s Child has far to go” mean?

The phrase comes from the popular English nursery rhyme, “Monday’s Child.” See the poem below.

The poem features the days of the week. The reference to “far to go” has been interpreted in different ways. The most positive is that the child is full of talent and potential, and the sky is the limit for their success. The other interpretation is that the child has had setbacks or special needs in life and has a way to catch up.

Monday’s Child

Written by Louise Bagshawe

Monday’s child is fair of face,
Tuesday’s child is full of grace,
Wednesday’s child is full of woe,
Thursday’s child has far to go,
Friday’s child is loving and giving,
Saturday’s child works hard for his living,
And the child that is born on the Sabbath day,
Is bonny and blithe, and good and gay.

Growing Popularity

The fourth day of the workweek has seemingly grown more popular for many folks for different reasons.

As many colleges have reduced class activities on Fridays, the night before adds to the weekend fun. It’s a night to hang out with friends, perhaps enjoy a libation, and relax from the stress of studies and day-to-day living. Perhaps most important, it’s become a night that students relish because they know they can sleep in the next morning. (And, who doesn’t like that feeling?)

And, on the career front, more and more employers are allowing employees to work from home at least one day of the week. Fridays seem to be the pick of many. And, as such, Thursday nights likely feel a little more relaxed with employees knowing that they won’t have to deal with daily commuting issues and that the weekend is just around the corner.

International

In Norway, this day of the week is when most stores stay open later for shoppers. Norwegians don’t have to rush to pick up that last-minute gift or necessity. In Australia, most workers are paid on Thursdays, so it immediately becomes a favored day for that reason alone. Movies also premiere on this day in the land down under.

So, is Thursday the new Friday? Well, not quite yet. But, it does seem to be a day that most folks are in very positive moods, while work is still being accomplished and goals are being worked on. With people in good moods, Thursdays tend to be good days to make sales calls, have lunch with friends, and live in the moment. The weekend will come when it comes. The start of the week is far behind you. Enjoy the moment; enjoy your Thursday!
