National Puzzle day is on January 29. Jodi Jill created the day in 2002. She is a newspaper puzzle and professional quiz maker. It is a day to enjoy puzzles of any form, from jigsaws to escape rooms.

A puzzle is anything that has a well-defined solution while also entertaining the solver. It’s no puzzle why they are so popular! Puzzles can be divided into different types. Some of these categories include tiling puzzles, mechanical puzzles, tour puzzles, and logic puzzles.

John Spilsbury was a mapmaker in London and created the first jigsaw puzzle in 1767. It was a map of the world and was used as an aid to teaching geography.

The world’s first crossword was created by journalist Arthur Wayne and published on December 21, 1913, in the New York World’s Sunday paper.

Jigsaw puzzles were initially expensive because they were made of wood and had to be cut one piece at a time.

The popularity of jigsaw puzzles decreased significantly during the Great Depression. It wasn’t until 1933 when sales reached 10 million per week.

The Rubik’s Cube was invented in 1974 by Ernő Rubik, a Hungarian sculptor and architecture professor.

A 1,000 piece Ravensburger puzzle has 1,008 pieces. This piece count needed eight additional pieces to keep its shape as a rectangle.
