National Orchid Day
Being a relatively new worldwide-recognized national day, the story behind the formation of National Orchid Day is just as beautiful as the plant itself. Read on to know more!
When is National Orchid Day?
National Orchid Day is celebrated on 16 April each year.
You’ll probably be full of questions about the day. To help solve some of your queries, we have answered some FAQs below.
When did National Orchid Day start?
In 2010, after volunteering at an orchid reserve in Chiapas, Mexico, Mike and Faith Young were so astonished by the enjoyable experience that they decided that, if they had a daughter, they would name her Orchid.
However, they lost her on April 16, 2014, during labor. To honor her death, a year later, they decided to begin the National Orchid Day, and the campaign, carried out with the help of their friends and family, was a success, leading to the recognition of the day worldwide.
How do I observe National Orchid Day?
A great way to commemorate the story behind this day, you can grow orchids in your home or donate to other reserves, like the one Mike and Faith went to. However, an even better way would be to share the story of Orchid Faith on social media and make it unforgettable, helping honor her.
Are orchids good houseplants?
Although they are pretty difficult to grow, orchids can be quite rewarding house plants. This, combined with the fact that there are over 26,000 recognized orchid varieties, which can withstand even extreme conditions, makes orchids an excellent option for your garden.
Do orchids prefer sun or shade?
Even though they thrive in strong light, direct sunlight can burn the plant, and, therefore, indirect sunlight is recommended.
With more than 26,000 discovered species, a number that is growing every day, there are more known orchid species than mammals or birds!
Because of their weight, mature orchids start to grow upside down.
Orchids can live up to around 100 years, and just the time between their germination and flowering is approximately five to seven years.

Orchids can grow in any place globally except for Antarctica (Yes, even the Arctic)!
